I grew up in this church. At age 12, youth study The Catechism, a book of questions and answers that explain what and why we, as Lutherans, believe what we do. We are also given extensive training in theology, what it means when we pray The Lord's Prayer, the ecumenical creeds...the Nicene Creed, the Apostles' Creed and the Athanasian Creed. We also study our main text, the Bible.
Depending on the teacher, your study can be as long as 2 years. It may sound boring but it's not. Lutheran ministers are typically good educators/teachers. You won't hear a lot about your going to he'll but we are taught our God is loving and forgiving and how we could seek to be that in our daily lives. We may not be able to quote Bible verses, but we know how to read the Bible and not just pick verses to justify ourselves and our actions. God said love.
