Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a native disease that causes significant morbidity and mortality among deer in North America. The disease is caused by EHD viruses. The virus is transmitted primarily by biting midges (small flies) of the genus Culicoides. The incubation period for disease to develop in deer is 5 to 10 days.
Epizootic hemorrhagic disease (EHD) is a hemorrhagic disease of white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) caused by an infection of a virus from the genus Orbivirus subsequently called Epizootic hemorrhagic disease virus (EHDV). It is an infectious, and sometimes fatal, virus that is characterized by extensive hemorrhages, and is found throughout the United States.
EHD (Epizootic Hemorrhagic Disease) is a hemorrhagic deer disease. An infectious virus causes it, and it's a frequently fatal condition. Adams says in short "EHD is a viral disease and the most common whitetail disease. It's transmitted by biting midges, commonly called no-see-ums, and it happens every year.". During the first few days, the infected deer might look and act normal or possibly show minor signs of illness.
EHD Update: Heavy Reports in Ohio, Indiana. It's late September and time to expect a rise in cases of hemorrhagic disease in deer, including both EHD and bluetongue, which are related viruses. Currently, NDA is aware of 11 states with lightly scattered reports or confirmed cases, with heavier occurrence and mortality happening now across Ohio ...
Once infected with EHD, deer usually die within 36 hours. EHD outbreaks are most common in the late summer and early fall when midges are abundant. EHD symptoms include fever, hemorrhage in muscle or organs, and swelling of the head, neck, tongue, and lips. A deer infected with EHD may appear lame or dehydrated.
