Asters are a member of the Asteraceae family. The name Aster is Greek, meaning "star," and refers to the appearance of the flowers. This genus is native to Eurasia, northwest Africa, Canada, and the northwest United States. Depending on the species, the plant may tolerate full sun or prefer partial shade.
Aster amellus is the type species of the genus and the family Asteraceae. [1] The name Aster comes from the Ancient Greek word ἀστήρ ( astḗr ), meaning "star", referring to the shape of the flower head. Many species and a variety of hybrids and varieties are popular as garden plants because of their attractive and colourful flowers.

Aster carolinianus is a fall blooming, climbing aster attracting pollinators. Photo by Lisa Sanderson, UF/IFAS. The climbing aster can grow to 12 feet tall and up to 2-4 feet wide. It tolerates a range of drought to wet conditions, and prefers full sun. Although, in the demo garden, climbing aster grows in the mottled shade of the pines.
Aster plants get their name from the Latin word for "star," and their flowers are often the superstars of the fall garden. Some aster's height can reach up to 6 feet with white and pink flowers but also, perhaps most strikingly, in rich purple, showy lavender, and occasionally blue.
